Cambridge spikers take Cozad title

COZAD -- Cambridge captured the Cozad volleyball tournament title Saturday.

The Trojans beat out Alma 25-10, 25-20 for the win.

Cambridge also downed Perkins County 25-23, 25-20 in the semifinals and Anselmo-Merna 25-15, 25-20 in game 1.

Shelby Schultz was the leading scorer for Cambridge against Anselmo-Merna. Schultz put in 17 points, had 8 aces, 4 digs and 15 kills. Cody Long led in digs with 5 and Frankie Petersen had 4 digs and 21 assists.

Petersen returned to lead the Trojans against Perkins County. Petersen had 25 assists, 4 aces, 3 ace blocks and totaled 6 points. Long and Schultz both added in 5 points. Schultz had 12 kills, 5 digs and 3 aces and Traci Keyser had 7 kills, 5 digs and 1 ace block.

Whitney Rice and Long were the top scorers in the final game against Alma. Both girls totaled 6 points for the title win. Long also had 10 digs and 1 ace, along with Schultz, who also had 10 digs, 12 kills, 1 ace and 3 ace blocks. Petersen led in assists with 23 and Lynne Lytle ad 3 ace blocks.

“The girls are playing great volleyball right now and continue to improve every part of their game.” said Cambridge coach Judy Mousel. “We play a tough schedule and try to mentally prepare for every game the same way. Winning this tournament at the end of the season is a huge confidence builder going into sub-districts.

“We struggled with our serve this weekend and will be working this week to gain back our composure at the serving line. I felt our serve receive from our primary passers was our key to winning this weekend's tournament. Petersen does an excellent job of running the offense when the passes are on target."

The Trojans play at home on Tuesday against Elm Creek at 5, 6 and 7 p.m.

Perkins County defeated Valentine 25-22, 25-22 in Game 1, but fell to Sutherland in Game 3 25-22, 20-25, 14-25.

Debi Johnson had 11 kills and Carlie Sis had 8 for Perkins County’s win over Valentine.

Sis also had 8 blocks and 4 digs. Jenni Sis led in digs with 6 and Mackenzie Hite had 22 assists, 6 blocks and 3 kills. Tiffany Dahlkoetter also had 6 blocks and Brittany Ross had 5.

Hite led the team in assists with 16 and had 8 digs and 2 blocks against Cambridge.

Jenni Sis had 9 digs and Brittany Ross had 7 blocks. Carlie Sis led in blocks with 10 and had 9 kills.

“We struggled on defense not blocking well and made several serve receive errors,” said Perkins County Coach Penny Hite. “They kept our offense very contained.”

Carlie Sis had 15 kills, 11 blocks and 14 digs against Sutherland. Debi Johnson followed with 14 kills, 5 blocks, 2 aces and 5 digs.

Ross had 12 digs and 3 aces and Hite had 32 assists, 4 blocks and 3 aces. Both Dahlkoetter and Ashley Brott had 8 blocks.

“Any time a team sees the same team more than once, you run the risk of getting beat,” Hite said. “We played a lot of defense today and made too many passing errors.”

Superior wins Southern Valley Tournament -- Southern Valley’s Eagles hosted their invitational Saturday in the Southern Valley and Orleans gyms.

Superior won the tournament after defeating North Platte St. Pat’s. Wilcox-Hildreth was third, winning over Arapahoe and Bertrand was fifth after taking down Southern Valley.

The Eagles started the day off with Wilcox-Hildreth in pool A. The Eagles fell 25-21, 25-13.

North Platte St. Pat’s also fell to Wilcox-Hildreth, before taking the Eagles 25-12, 25-14.

Jessica Murdoch led the Eagles against Wilcox-Hildreth, scoring 6 points and 3 aces, 2 kills and 2 digs. Cassie Brooks had 6 assists and Hennessey Hogeland had 2 kills.

Justina Snider had 4 kills and 2 points against North Platte St. Pat’s for the Eagles. Johanna Perkins led in scoring with 4 points and had 3 digs. Brooks had 8 assists and Murdoch had 1 ace.

Brooks and Murdoch teamed up with 4 points each against Bertrand.

Murdoch also had 10 digs, 5 kills and 1 ace and Brooks had 5 digs and 10 assists.

The Eagles came up short 25-12, 30-28 to Bertrand for fifth and Arapahoe took fourth, after a 25-16, 20-25, 25-19 loss to Wilcox-Hildreth.

Arapahoe started tournament action in pool B with Bertrand, defeating them 20-25, 25-22, 25-22.

Superior also downed Bertrand and upstaged Arapahoe 25-17, 25-17 to take on North Platte St. Pat’s for the championship.

Maywood 2nd at Stapleton Tournament -- Maywood finished as runner-up in the Stapleton invitational Saturday. Sumner-Eddyville-Miller won over the Tigers 25-12, 25-16 to win the tournament.

Maywood started round one by defeating Brady 25-7, 25-16 before moving into round two to take the win 26-24, 22-25, 25-15 over Wauneta-Palisade.

The Broncos finished fourth, after falling to Maxwell 25-20, 25-19. Wauneta-Palisade defeated Stapleton 25-21, 25-22 in round one.

Brooke Koester led Maywood with 11 points against Brady. Brooke also had 1 ace, 9 assists and 4 digs.

Melody Norgaard added in 6 points, 1 aces and 5 digs. Susan Koester had 4 points, 3 kills and Staci Koester had 8 digs and 3 kills. Kadee Arensdorf also had 3 kills and 4 assists.

Susan Koester served 11 points against the Broncos aand had 3 aces, 4 kills and 13 digs. Michelle Hastings and Arensdorf both had 6 points.

Arensdorf also had 7 assists and Hastings had 5 kills and 7 digs. Staci Koester had 13 digs and Brook had 9 assists. Ashley Merrit had 4 kills.

Arensdorf led the team against Sumner-Eddyville-Miller. Arensdorf had 3 points, 1 ace, 3 assists and 2 kills.

Staci Koester and Norgaard both had 2 points and 1 ace. Brooke Koester also had 3 assists and 2 kills and Merrit had 4.

Hastings, Susan Koester and Norgaard all had 5 digs.
