Bison boys tennis team falls to North Platte

NORTH PLATTE -- The McCook High School varsity boys tennis team dropped a 7-2 dual to North Platte Tuesday at North Platte.

John Huffman won his match at No. 6 singles by an 8-6 score and the No. 1 doubles team of Asher Brooks and Austin Larson won an 8-3 decision.

"North Platte has a pretty good team and they were just better than us today (Tuesday)," said McCook tennis coach Matt Wiemers. "Their top four players all have varsity experience and they played like it. Our lone win came from John Huffman, who really played a solid match. John made some great shots and showed a lot of hustle on the court. He still needs to work on his serving and net play. But its nice to see him hit his ground strokes with more consistency.

"In doubles Asher and Austin picked up our only win. They played well enough to get the win, but still have some work to do. They played better today than they did Monday at Kearney. They will have a tough match against Holdrege on Thursday and will need to play well."

The McCook team will play at 4 p.m. Thursday at Holdrege.

"This will be the last time we see Holdrege, so it will be a very important match for them to win," Wiemers said. They are 1-1 against Holdrege for the season, so this will be a big match to get."

The McCook junior varsity won 7-of-12 matches against the Bulldogs.

"Our junior varsity played well and got some much deserved court time," Wiemers said. "Tony Bieck once again lead the team in wins going 2-0 on the day. He is playing with a lot of confidence which is leading to his success on the court.

"Cameron Foster played well in both singles and doubles and came away with a 1-1 record. Cameron was very scrappy and did a better job of lowering his unforced errors.

"J.P. Tapia and Taylor Rivera earned two wins on the day and showed signs of improvement. They have had a successful season and are getting better with each match they play.

"We will take all 15 players to Holdrege on Thursday and get them more matches. I'm glad the schedule has allowed us to get the whole team some matches. The kids have worked hard and its nice to see them rewarded for their effort."
