Summer event to include barbecue contest

The annual Crazy Days retail promotion, now known as Homespun Fun, will include a little extra this year.

The McCook City Council approved Monday night the request from the McCook Chamber of Commerce to block traffic from West C between Norris Avenue and West First July 17 from 7 a.m.-7 p.m., for an amateur backyard barbeque contest and activities for kids.

Homespun Fun (Crazy Days) will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with the barbeque contest on Saturday.

Meat for the contestants in the barbeque contest will be provided by Schmick's Market and first prize will be $150 and a Ducane grill, donated by D & S Hardware and worth $400. Second prize is $100 and third prize is $50, with all contestants receiving a T-shirt.

Contestants will then grill steaks and serve serve lunch to the public along with approximately 50 National Guard men and women home during that time.

Tents will be set up along with tables and chairs so the public can enjoy their food in the shade and vendors will be on site to serve snow cones and cotton candy.

Games include minnow and turtle races for kids. Minnows will be provided but it will be BTOT - or bring your own turtle, for the turtle races.

"The kids really enjoyed the races last year and the minnows actually raced," said Pam Harsh, Chamber executive director. Minnows are released through a rain gutter and kids learned to ripple the water in front of the fish to keep them moving, she said.

This is the second year the Chamber coordinated several events in conjunction with Homespun Fun (Crazy Days.)

Last year was the first time and it proved to be a success, Harsh said, with the barbeque contest drawing 16 teams.
