MCC building projects advance

Thursday, April 26, 2007

Meeting in McCook on Wednesday, the Mid Plains board of governors approved one remodeling project and took further steps toward one of the most significant construction projects ever undertaken for McCook Community College.

A revised MCC Events Center Program Statement was approved and will be forwarded to the state Coordinating Commission for Post Secondary Education, which will consider it at its May 17 meeting.

The project is far from a sure thing, but the college is investigating the means and possibility of raising funds for the structure, which would be located in part of what is now Kelley Park.

New casework in the MCC?biology labs will be installed this summer, thanks to approval of a bid of $73,325 from Innovative Laboratory of Ashland, Neb.

The bid was let for all new wood casework, two fume hoods and installation.

In other business:

* Dr. Richard Tubbs was the recipient of the 2007 Phi Theta Kappa Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction at a recent meeting in Nashville.

* MCC's PTK academic student honorary group also was recognized for recent awards, as was the Phi Beta Lambda business honorary.

* A copy of the 1926 McCook College Catalog was presented by board member Roger Wilson, and will become part of the memorabilia in a display in the Learning Center.

* The college's "ad hoc" committee policy was adopted on final reading.

Upcoming events include MCC's commencement ceremonies at 10 a.m. in True Hall May 11, and a board retreat May 16 at Dancing Leaf Lodge in Wellfleet.
