Bison netters top North Platte

NORTH PLATTE -- The McCook Bison girls tennis team claimed a 6-3 decision at North Platte Tuesday.

Winning matches for the Bison in singles were Hannah Putz, No. 2; Amy Lester, No. 4; Alli Lester, No. 5; and Michelle McKenna, No. 6.

Melissa Lyster and Amy Lester won at No. 1 doubles. Hanah Swanhorst and Hannah Putz won at No. 3 doubles.

Dropping tough matches were Swanhorst, No. 1 singles; Lyster, No. 3 singles; and McKenna-Alli Lester, No. 2 doubles.

"Going into the rematch with North Platte, I told the team we will take North Platte's best shot playing them on their home court, and that is exactly what happened," said McCook tennis coach Matt Wiemers.

"We did escape with a 6-3 win, but I was not pleased with the play of the team as a whole. The girls played hard, but their mental focus just wasn't where it needed to be to compete. We will definitely address this in practice this week, in preparation for the Scottsbluff invite this weekend."

With the win, McCook remains unbeaten in dual play with a record of 5-0.

"We got a great performance from Hannah (Putz) at No. 2 singles," Wiemers said. "She played as well as she has all season and came away with an 8-3 decision. Hannah just didn't make many errors and played very consistent.

"She is getting over her cold and that is a huge boost to her game. I like the momentum she is building going into the Scottsbluff invite this weekend.

"Amy and Melissa picked up a win at No. 1 doubles, which was against a decent opponent. They got off to an early 5-2 lead and led the entire match. They were up 7-4, only to let North Platte back into the match at 7-6.

"They had a hard time closing the match and finally did with an 8-6 score. They need to remain aggressive and not let up. This was the third match where they have built a sizable lead and then let their opponent back into the match."

The McCook junior varsity continued to play well and shut out North Platte, winning all 16 matches.

"This is the first action they have had in about a month," Wiemers said. "With the weather not being cooperative, they have had a long layoff between matches. They responded well, with another dominating performance.

"Like I have said all year, we have some promising players coming up and all they need is more court experience. I have been pleased with their steady improvement this season."

The next action action for the Bison girls tennis team is 1:30 p.m. Thursday against Hershey in North Platte.

"It was scheduled to start at 2:30, but we moved it up an hour because I am taking all 36 girls," Wiemers said.
