Bison boys, girls swept by Dusters

HOLDREGE -- The McCook High School varsity boys and girls basketball teams both lost at Holdrege Saturday.

The Bison boys (3--3) lost to the Dusters 59-39 and the Bison girls (2-5) lost 77-44.

The McCook girls were paced by three players with 7 points each -- Joanna Bryant, Austin Wilson and Kelsee Meissner. Melissa Lyster and Taryn Placzek each scored 6.

Ashley Carfield chipped in with 4 points, Betsy Kohmetscher 3, Lindsey Hazlitt 2 and Lindsey McNutt 2.

Kohmetscher led McCook in rebounds with 4 and had 3 steals. Bryant had 2 assists. Wilson had 2 steals. Lyster had 4 deflections and Brianna Watkins 2.

Holdrege had four players in double figures, led by Jenna Issacson with 22 points. Danielle Clayton scored 16. followed by Tessa Kreutzer and Ashley Daily with 12 each.

"We need to do a better job of handling pressure and taking care of the basketball," said McCook girls basketball coach Barry Schaeffer. "The last two games we have let the other team dictate what we do and we must get better at handling it.

"We also need to execute defensively and force the other team into turnovers. We have some things to work on this week and I am confident that we will do our best to correct our mistakes."

McCook hosts Phillipsburg, Kan., Thursday at the MHS gym. The girls game starts at 5:45 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30 p.m.

The Holdrege boys jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first quarter and led at halftime 35-22.

Zach Wieser led the Bison with 11 points. Cory Gaston added 9, Seth Schaeffer 8, Matt Berry 4, Josh Cherry 2, Andy Lambing 2, John Swanhorst 2 and Eric Rippen 1.

Three Dusters scored in double figures, led by Mario Funetes with 16 points. Adam Fulmer scored 12 and John Goodwin 11. Matt Ecklun chipped in with 8.

Holdrege JV boys 54, McCook 34

The McCook junior varsity boys dropped a 54-34 decision to Holdrege Saturday night.

Four McCook players scored 6 points -- Dillon Goltl, Andrew Reitz, Ryan Hardin and Montrez Hines. Aaron Ruppert scored 4, Jeff Lorentz 2, Chris Stull 2 and J.D. Stone 2.

Stull and and Stone each grabbed 6 rebounds, Goltl 5, Hines 5 and Hardin 4. Mike Grabowski had 4 assists. Goltl had 3 steals, Reitz 2 and Grabowski 2.

Holdrege JV girls 45, McCook 33

The McCook JV girls lost at Holdrege 45-33 Saturday.

Melissa Lyster led McCook with 8 points. Hanah Swanhorst scored 6, Kali Lyons 4, Kelsee Meissner 4, Joanna Bryant 2, Audrey Krepcik 2, Brianna Watkins 2 and Ashley Palic 1.

Sydney Jumps led the Bison in rebounds with 11, followed by Watkins with 8 and Swanhorst 5.

Four players had 2 assists -- Lyons, Bryant, Swanhorst and Meissner. Lyons and Meissner each had 3 steals.

"We can't give up a big lead at half (23-12) and play from behind and expect to win," said McCook JV girls coach Robin Heinrichs.

"We need to handle the press better and do a better job of communicating and rotating on defense. The effort was there.

"Now we need to correct the little things we are doing wrong and work on improving as a team."
