Study, design approved for MCC facility

VALENTINE -- While not approving the actual construction of an event and activities center at McCook Community College, the Mid Plains board of governors hired architects and approved spending an estimated $35,000 to plan and create cost estimates for the project.

Meeting Wednesday for the first time in the extended campus classroom in Valentine, the governors authorized creation of a design and cost estimate based on the findings of study of the need for additional classroom and activity space.

In related action, the board hired Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects LLC in association with Anderson Mason Dale Architects to design and create cost estimates for the development of the plan.

Following an 8 minute executive session, the board extended Mid-Plains President Michael Chipps' contract to 2008-09. From his current $125,000 salary, the pay will increase in steps to $147,500.

In other business, the board:

* Received information about "executive limitations" possibilities related to policy governance, from board member Elizabeth Benjamin.

* Approved program reviews for Building Construction Technol-ogy, Electrical Technology and Transfer Degree programs.

* Accepted a recommendation seeking authorization to offer online associate degrees.

* Approved a three-year contract with Dana F. Cole and Co. LLP to conduct the MPCC annual audit.

* Heard a presentation from Bruce Dowse, dean of outreach and training, and set parameters for next months reports on public information and marketing and enrollment.

* Adopted guidelines for those who wish to address the board of governors. In the future, anyone who wishes to do so will be asked to submit a form prior to the meeting listing his or her name, address and topic to be addressed.

Time will be limited to five minutes, the number of people to address the board can be limited and the board will not respond to or take immediate action on any topic raised during the Public Forum portion of the meetings.

Following a short self-evaluation the the meeting, the board adjourned until its next meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. July 26 in the Black Box Theater on the MCC campus in McCook.
