First Central Bank wins Sluggers Tourney

The 2006 McCook Midget Baseball Association, Inc. Sluggers division tournament Thursday through Saturday.

The Sluggers division is a pitching machine division in which seven teams competed for the tournament championship.

The tournament trophies were provided by McDonalds.

Championship Game 1

First Central Bank 11,

Deveny Motors 4

Six strikeouts coupled with 21 hits put the pressure on Deveny in the opening game of the elimination bracket.

Deveny saw seven strikeouts and 17 base hits keep the game close into the 4th.

Five extra base hits for First Central Bank to one extra base hit for Deveny Motors applied a bit more pressure to the game for the division champion.

A 3-0 lead in the first led to a 5-0 lead for First Central Bank in the 2nd. Another run in the 3rd kept the score at 6-0 at the end of the inning.

Deveny Motors held First Central Bank scoreless in the 4th while putting up 4 runs in their half of the inning.

First Central responded with 5 runs in the 5th while Deveny went 5 up 3 down to finish the game.

Riley Loop led Deveny going 3 for 3 with a double and Baumbach and Strecker went 2 for 3. Eiler, Nick Malleck, Taylor and Rietz all had hits for Deveny.

Hoffman went 4 for 4 and Powell and Van Pelt went 3 for 4 with Powell earning a triple in the 5th.

Fritsch, Lucero, Lichty and Suda went 2 for 3 in the game. The win by First Central Bank forced a repeat game with Deveny Motors for the championship of the Sluggers division.

Championship Game 2

First Central Bank 14,

Deveny Motors 2

In the last game of the day, First Central Bank put one run on the board in the top of the first.

Deveny started slow with the side being retired in the first.

First Central Bank put up 4 runs in the 2nd on 6 hits while Deveny put up 1 run on 3 hits. First Central Bank put up 2 runs on 4 hits in the 3rd while Deveny got 1 hit.

The 4th saw First Central Bank held scoreless as Deveny pressed 3 outs in the first five batters.

The top of the 5th saw First Central Bank put up 8 runs on 10 hits.

Deveny had Mitchell Reitz go 2 for 2. Loop, Taylor, Eiler, Allen and Rio Bustamante all went 1 for 2 in hitting.

Game 1

Century 21 15,

McCook Optimist 3

Century 21 jumped off to a strong start with 8 of their first 9 batters getting singles or doubles with Logan Kircher and Matthew Carfield getting doubles.

Kircher and Dalton Goodenberger both went 4 for 4 in the game with Peyton Stagmeyer, Travis Wallen and Cody Clason all went 3 for 4 in their appearances.

Jarod Bryant went 3 for 3 while Cole Leach, Sean Tolliver and Dustin Bredvick went 2 for 3 with singles.

Sid Hoffman, Drew Psota, Lance Garcia and Devin Wichman all singled for the Optimists.

Game 2

Bison Dental 8,

Southwest Nebraska

Physical Therapy 7

SWNPT scored in the first with Dalton Koetter and Caleb Sheets scoring but hit a drought in the 2nd while Bison Dental waited until the 3rd to put up 4 runs.

SWNPT put up 5 in the 3rd to take a 7-4 lead but was held scoreless in the 4th and 5th while Bison Dental put up another 4 runs.

In the winning effort Coy Terry went 4 for 4 while Colton Lashley andrew Messersmith and Bryce Lyons all went 3 for 3.

SWNPT's Koetter and Sheets went 2 for 3 while Andrew Aguilar, John Paul Kain, Mike Price and Nick Fuchuck all singled.

Game 3

First Central Bank 13,

School Reflections 10

First Central Bank started early with 9 runs in the first with singles for their first 5 batters and a home run for Spencer Powell.

In the 2nd it was 3 up 3 down for FCB.

School Reflections put up 4 runs in the first and added two more in the second to close the gap to 9-6.

School Reflections added another 4 in the 3rd but FCB added 3.

Both teams were held scoreless in the 4th while FCB added one in the 5th. Noah Hoffman went 4 for 4 while Luke Lichty and Jacob Fritsche went 3 for 3.

Keaton Garcia and Levi Baughman went 4 for 4 while Trevor Matson, Joe Schlager, and Isaac Langan all had two hits with Matson getting a triple.

Game 4

Deveny Motors 12,

Century 21 10

Century 21 started hot with 4 runs in the first with 2 doubles and 2 singles.

Deveny bounced back in the bottom half of the 1st by putting up 3 runs.

Deveny would score the only runs in the 2nd by adding runs number 4 and 5.

In the 3rd Century 21 would add three more while Deveny would add two.

In the 4th Deveny scored 5 while Century 21 only put up 2.

The 5th saw 1 for Century 21.

Clason, Wallen and Goodenberger got hits in each appearance while Clayton Warner put up a triple in the losing effort.

Deveny saw Phoenix Kalinski, Kasey Taylor andMax Allen go 3 for 3.

Zach Strecker doubled and Eric Eiler and Bret Baumbach both went 2 for 3.

Game 5

First Central Bank 12,

Bison Dental 7

Bison Dental outscored First Central Bank in the first 3 to 1 while both teams put up one run in the second.

Both teams had a slow 3rd with Bison Dental was the only team to score but was held to 1 run.

In the 4th, Bison Dental put 3 runs to finish their scoring for the evening. First Central put up 9 runs in the top of the 5th to secure the win.

First Central put up 9 runs in the 5th to take the game.

At the end of 5 innings both teams were tied up at Logan Bunger went 4 for 4 while Messersmith, Lyons, Lashley and Terry each got 2 hits.

Adryan Lucero, Fritsche and Powell went 4 for 4 for the winners. Hoffman and Caleb

Suda went 3 for 4 and Aaron Mockery, Grant Oberg, Kyle Van Pelt and Cody Harrison all singled to help move runners.

Game 6

School Reflections 17

The batting ability of both teams showed in a game that saw only nine strikeouts and 30 hits for School Reflections and 26 for SWNPT.

Dalton Koetter hit a home run and a triple.

Stephen Kirk, Sheets and Fuchuck went 3 for 4 to help in the win. Price, Devon Strunk and Logan Gleason all helped with multiple singles.

School Reflections saw Trevor Matson and Spencer Leitner go 6 for 6 on the seven-man team.

Keaton Garcia, Joe Schlager. Luke Curl put up 4 hits with Garcia and Schlager both getting a double in their 4 hits.

Matt Macfee and Levi Baughman both hit 3 for 6 helping School Reflections keep up the pace.

Game 7

Century 21 10,

Southwest Nebraska

Physical Therapy 0

Century 21 started its half of the inning with a 2 run lead.

The lead never changed hands with Century 21 adding 3 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd and 3 in the 4th.

Clason, Wallen, Kircher and Goodenberger all went 3 for 3.

Carfield, Wyatt Burkert, Warner, Justin Patras and Delton Anderson all went 2 for 3 with Warner doubling in the 3rd inning.

SWNPT saw 5 total hits with Fuchuck getting 2 of those hits and Koetter, Sheets and Andrew Aguilar each getting one hit.

Game 8

Bison Dental 12,

Optimist 10

Both teams started slow with both teams only getting one run. The second saw both teams go scoreless. In the 3rd the Optimists put up 3 runs to Bison Dental's 8.

The 4th saw another scoreless inning for the Optimists while Bison Dental put up another 3 runs.

In the 5th the Optimists made a run that ended with 6 runs and 7 hits.

Garcia and Bredvick went both got 4 hits while Leach hit 3 and Hoffman, Bryant and Wichman went 2 for 4.

A double from Bryant was the only extra base hit for the Optimists.

Bison Dental saw 2 for 3 appearances from Terry, Bunger, Lyons, Lashley and Messersmith.

Chance Koetter, Dustin Payton and Gavin Klee each had hits with Klee and Lashley each getting doubles.

Game 9

Century 21 12,

Bison Dental 11

Century 21 started the inning slow being held scoreless in the opening stanza.

Bison Dental put up 3 in their half of the inning.

Century 21 tied it up again in the top half only to have Bison Dental add another 3 in their half of the 2nd.

Two runs for the visitors closed the gap again only to have Bison Dental put up and 3 runs.

Century 21 put up another 2 runs in the 4th but this time held Bison Dental to 1 run.

The 5th was owned by Century 21 in the top half with 5 runs coming in. In the bottom of the 5th

Bison Dental could only muster 1 run to drop the game 12-11.

Stagmeyer went 4 for 4 and Wallen, Kircher and Goodenberger all went 3 for 4.

Terry and Bunger went 4 for 4 while Lyons, Lashley and Messersmith went 3 for 4.

Klee, Koetter, Devin Flaherty and Payton all added singles in the loss for Bison Dental.

Game 10

Deveny Motors 3

First Central Bank 0

A one-run lead in the first held until the 4th when it was stretched to 3 runs in the win for Deveny with only 8 hits.

First Central picked up 9 hits.

Hoffman and Lichty had two hits each for FCB.

Riley Loop, Baumbach, Taylor, Mitchell Reitz, Zack Strecker and Allen all had singles.

Game 11

First Central Bank 10,

Century 21 6

In the elimination bracket championship the scoring showed up again in a 16-run game.

Century 21 went 4 up 3 down in the first inning while FCB batted 6 getting 1 run.

The 2nd saw Century 21 put up 2 runs with FCB tying it up with 1 as well.

The 3rd saw 2 runs for Century 21 but FCB was 4 up 3 down and Century 21 took a 4 to 2 lead into the 4th.

One run in the 4th for Century 21 and 2 for FCB left the game at 5-4 headed into the 5th.

A 6 run inning by FCB in the top of the inning left Century 21 needing 5 runs to tie it up.

They got 1 and ended their run of the elimination bracket.

Wallen and Stagmeyer went 3 for 3 while Warner, Patras and Goodenberger went 2 for 3 in a losing cause for Century 21.

Hoffman went 4 for 4 and Lichty 3 for 3 in the win for First Central Bank.

Nine of 10 hitters put the ball in play for First Central Bank to put them in the championship game against Deveny Motors.

Century 21's tournament run earned them the 3rd place in the tournament.
