NORTH PLATTE -- The McCook High School boys and girls track teams competed at the North Platte Dual meet Monday afternoon.

The meet was rescheduled from Thursday because of the weather.

The McCook boys won 10 individual events and the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays and scored 91 points. North Platte scored 50 points.

Two McCook boys captured two first-place individual medals.

Tony Purvis won the 100-meter dash in 11.3 seconds and the 200 in 23.7.

John Swanhorst won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.6 and the 300 hurdles in 42.9.

Other first-place efforts belonged to Jon Bryant, 400, 54.8; Josh Cherry, 800, 2:06.4; Ryan Ankersen, 3200, 11:13.9; Micah Kamla, triple jump, 40 feet, 5 inches; Mason Pohl, pole vault, 13-6; and Sam Frazier, discus, 138-10.

The 4x100 relay placed first with a time of 45.3 seconds and the 4x400 relay won in 3:36.1.

The Bison placed second in the 4x800 relay and also 2-3 in the 4x400.

The Bison boys squad was bolstered by the efforts of seniors Brendan Liess and Jeff Klug, who are both returning to form after recovering from knee surgery. Both tore their ACLs in the first football game last fall.

Liess ran on the first-place 4x400-meter relay team with Purvis, Swanhorst and Cherry.

Klug ran on the 4x100 relay with Austin Barenberg, Purvis and Nate Berry.

Bison boys track coach John Gumb said Liess' split in the 4x400 relay was comparable to the split he ran in the first track meet of the 2005 season.

"Brendan and Jeff are making a lot of progress," Gumb said.

Gumb added that he was pleased with the way the squad performed considering the lack of practice time due to weather and other factors.

"We had a lot of good, young athletes show a lot of progress," he said.

The North Platte girls edged out McCook 72-69 for first place.

The Bison girls claimed five individual titles as well as the 4x100 and 4x800 relays.

Event winners for the McCook girls were Kayla Wilson, shot put, 119-4; Allison Smith, shot put, personal record 38 feet; Sarah Craw, pole vault, 9 feet; Erica Clapp, long jump, 15-8 1/4; and Danae McCorkle, 100-meter hurdles, 17.5.

The 4x100 relay of Clapp, Austin Wilson, Brianna Ward and Amy Beckenhauer finished first with a time of 53.7 seconds.

The 4x800 relay of Rebecca Rawlings, Joanna Bryant, Kala Smalley and Meghan Ecker placed first with a time of 11:27.4.

"In the field events, we were above average as we scored 40 of our 69 points," said McCook girls track coach Steve Clapp. "On the track, our lack of quality practice time due to the weather was very evident. In the next couple weeks, this should improve and our times will hopefully improve also.

"This is a meet that would have been nice to win, but it was a chance to see all of our athletes in competition and to evaluate them against each other."

The Bison boys and girls varsity and junior varsity track athletes will be in action Saturday as the hosts of the LeRoy Hoehner Invitational at the MHS track.

Other schools competing are Lexington, Colby, Southern Valley, Cambridge, Dundy County and Hastings-St. Cecilia.
