Cambridge boys rope Broncos; punch ticket to state tournament

Cambridge's boys pushed past Wauneta-Palisade 72-65 in overtime for the Nebraska Class D1-6 district championship Tuesday at the McCook High School gymnasium.

The Trojans managed to stay one step ahead of the Broncos until the fourth quarter when the two teams tied it up 57-57, pushing the game into overtime.

Waid Vontz, Anthony Lytle and Bo Cribelli put in the shots to win the game 72-65 for the Trojans.

Cambridge returns to the state tournament next week.

The Trojans were state champs in 2004.

With Vontz and Lytle, the Trojans have a chance at the championship again.

The Trojans also have a competitive team with the Cribelli brothers, Keener, Ballou and Palmer.

Wauneta-Palisade will also get a shot at the state title, as they travel to Lincoln as a wild card.

The Broncos lost in the semifnals at the state tourney in 2005.

Trevor and Russell Ridlen along with Andrew Isom and Marc Klima led the Broncos in scoring this season and will give the Broncos an experienced edge in the state games.

Vontz led the Trojans with 29 points against the Broncos. Lytle followed with 17 points and Josh Keener had 9.

Trevor Ridlen and Marc Klima were the top scorers for the Broncos with 17 points each. Andrew Isom trailed with 12 points and Russell Ridlen had 11.

OAKLEY, Kan. -- Rawlins County-Atwood came up short to Oakley 52-41 Tuesday at Oakley.

Rodney Rippe scored 21 points for Rawlins County.

Cedric Green tallied 10 points and Drew Basgall had 8 for the Buffaloes.

Robert Cooksey led Oakley with 21 points. Paul Kuhlman added 19.

HOXIE, Kan. -- Hoxie's boys fell to Hill City 47-38 in the first round of the Ellis Class 1A sub-state Tuesday.

Hoxie took a 23-17 lead in the first half and led 34-23 after three quarters.

Mike Gerstner led Hill City with 14 points.

Curt Welter followed with 12 points and Tane Brown had 11.

Thayne Spresser and Jake Moss paired up with 13 points for Hoxie.

Derek Spresser totaled 8 points for the Indians.

KEARNEY -- Holdrege's boys will travel to State after downing Hastings 50-47 Tuesday in the Nebraska Class B-5 district championship in Kearney.

Pat Ackerman led Holdrege to the win with 17 points.

Bradford Smith followed with 13 points and Kyle Bell had 8.

Holdrege will play in the state tournament March 9-11 at Lincoln.
