Clean sweep for Bison teams against Ogallala

The McCook High School varsity boys basketball team swept Ogallala 73-57 Friday night at the MHS gymnasium and improved to 8-11.

"Tonight our kids bought in to our program a total team philosophy," said Bison coach Tim Garcia. I couldn't be prouder of our kids, they worked their tails off this week in practice and it paid off tonight."

Brandon Crick led the Bison boys with 21 points.

"Brandon Crick had a great game on both ends of the court. He and (Joel) Putz had some big 3's and Crick and (Joel) Arterburn pulled down some huge rebounds tonight," Garcia said.

Garrett Rippen followed with 11 points and Putz had 9. Arterburn led the Bison in rebounds with 8. Tony Purvis had 6 rebounds and 7 assists.

Crick also had 6 rebounds and Josh Cherry had 4 steals

Wade Paumer led Ogallala with 18 points. Adam Brown had 12 points and Shane Cooney had 8.

The Bison play in the East-West Shootout Thursday through Saturday.

"We have a big week against Gering, Alliance and Scottsbluff in the East -West Shoot-Out. It will be a fun trip and we are hoping for three big wins," Garcia said.

McCook's girls rolled past Ogallala 58-48 Friday night at the MHS gymnasium.

The Bison took the first quarter with a 5-point lead.

Ogallala came back in the second tying the game 26-26 at halftime. McCook led 40-30 after three quarters.

Allison Smith posted 19 points to the Bison win. Jillian Bryant finished with 15 points.

Teammates Jessica Harris and Kayla Wilson had 10 points.

Smith and Bryant led in rebounds with 11 and 10 respectively.

Bryant had 5 assists and Wilson had 3 steals.

McCook hit 22-of-31 free throws.

Candace Ewert led Ogallala in scoring with 14 points. Lacey Theiler had 10 points and Dani Dam had 6.

"We've been coming in early in the morning to shoot free throws," said McCook girls coach Barry Schaeffer. "It paid off. We had balanced scoring. Kayla Wilson hit big shot after big shot.

"In the third quarter, we played great defense and settled down."

McCook improved to 7-12 and will host Gering, Alliance and Scottsbluff Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

"I look for us to challenge all three teams," Schaeffer said. "They have to play us on our home court."

The McCook Bison JV's squeezed past Ogallala, 59-50, in boys high school basketball play here Friday.

Andy Lambing pumped in 17 points to lead the Bison. Brett Burton chipped in 13 points.

David Swisher added 11 points, followed by John Swanhorst with 10.

Leading scorer for the Indians was Michael Kubitscek with 17 points. Teammate Russell Thomas added 10 points.

McCook hit 24-of-40 free throws for 60 percent. Ogallala was 8-for-17 from the line for 47 percent.

"The second quarter we just could not get any of our shots to fall," McCook Coach Dan Hilton said.

"We were in pretty good control after the first quarer but only scoring 9 points in the second, turned the game into a battle."

"It was a very physical game in which 57 fouls were called and we were 11 of 17 in the fourth quarter and some of those were big down the strech," Hilton added.

"I was really pleased with the desire of the kids to come out on top tonight. It was like we just willed ourselves to win this one."

McCook JV will play in the East-West Shootout Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Gering, Alliance and Scottsbluff.

The McCook Bison JV girls downed Ogallala 42-22 Friday night.

Austin Wilson scored 14 points to lead the Bison in scoring.

Ashley Carfield and Marissa Wallace each pulled down 7 rebounds for McCook. Teammate Kelsee Meissner grabbed 6rebounds.

Carfield also had 6 steals for the Bison.

McCook was 5-for-9 from the line for 56 percent.

Becki Chandler led the Indians in scoring with 9 points.

McCook JV will play in the East-West Shootout Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at home against Gering, Alliance and Scottsbluff.
