Water project progress

Wooden scaffolding forms the inner perimeter of McCook's new 4 million gallon water storage tank south of town.Pre-poured outer walls are ready to be put into place, then the scaffolding will be covered with a membrane and concrete will be poured to form the roof of the tank. The metal building in the foreground will house the treatment plant, which will remove nitrates, uranium and arsenic from the city water supply. "We're still on schedule," said City Manager John Bingham. Nitrates have been the main problem with the city's water supply, but McCook will be the first city in the nation to take action to meet the new arsenic standards when they go into effect. At right is a receiving area for about $100,000 worth of salt which will be used each year at the treatment plant.
