Motorcycle accident

Tuesday, October 19, 2004

Law enforcement officers and emergency medical responders search the canyons and road ditches south of McCook's Butler Hill, on Highway 83, this morning for what was thought to possibly be a second victim of an early-morning motorcycle accident. Nebraska State Patrol Sgt. Joel Smith (lower inset, kneeling) and Trooper Jeremiah Johnson inspect the helmet of the first victim, who was discovered, walking and bloody, on the highway about 8:30 a.m. today. McCook's ambulance transported that young adult male to Community Hospital of McCook, and other responders searched the hills for the motorcycle and the man believed to be the operator of the cycle. McCook Fire Chief Marc Harpham called out the MedStar helicopter, which helped by searching from the air, while Red Willow Western fire chief Bill Elliott (upper inset, right) and Sheriff Gene Mahon used a thermal-imaging camera to search dense weeds and plum thickets. Harpham said McCook police located the driver of the cycle in McCook about 9:30 a.m. Law enforcement officers believe that a McCook man transported from a McCook residence to Community Hospital at 9:50 a.m. is the driver of the motorcycle.
