Mustang, Falcon girls advance in sub-districts

CAMBRIDGE -- The Republican Valley Mustang girls advanced to the Nebraska Class D1-10 sub-district basketball tournament with a 45-41 victory over Bertrand Monday.

The Mustangs (14-7) will play Elwood in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Cambridge High School gymnasium.

The 7:45 p.m. semifinal features Medicine Valley vs. Eustis-Farnam. The title game is slated for 7 p.m. Thursday.

Jaime Coolidge, who scored 26 points in the Mustangs' 60-48 win over Dundy County Saturday, poured in 25 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and added 8 steals, 3 assists and 2 blocked shots against Bertrand.

Savannah Noyes and Caitlin Schaffert each scored 8 points against the Vikings. Lindsay Esch added 4.

Noyes pulled down 15 rebounds and Schaffert 13. Noyes blocked 2 shots and Schaffert 1.

Esch and Cayla Skaritka each had 3 assists. Schaffert scored 17 points against Dundy County Saturday. Noyes added 8.

Alison Glidden paced the Tigers with 23. Echo Steele scored 12 and Brooke Olson 7.

Lakeside Central

girls 41, Culbertson 27

IMPERIAL -- The Lakeside Central girls outscored Culbertson 21-12 in the second half en route to a 41-27 victory Monday in the first round of the Class D2-10 sub-district at Chase County High School.

The Falcons will play No. 1 seed Hayes Center in the 6 p.m. CT (5 p.m. MT) semifinal game Tuesday.

The other semifinal features Wheatland vs. Wallace at 7:45 p..m. CT (6:45 p.m. MT).

The winner play for the sub-district title at 7 p.m. CT (6 p.m. MT) Thursday.

Ashley Kauffman led Lakeside Central with 10 points, followed by Lacey Lewis and Megan Brennan with 9 each and Melanie Keelick 6. Lewis pulled down 15 rebounds and Megan Brennan 11.

Corin Hartzer led the Bears with 10 points, followed by Allison Smith with 9. Smith grabbed 13 rebounds.

The game marked the final girls basketball in Cambridge history because the school will undergo consolidation.

"The girls played one of their best overall games, but once again our problems shooting the ball was our downfall," said Culbertson girls coach Barry Schaeffer.

"I am very proud of the efforts the team gave tonight. I wish all of the girls luck in their future careers. This was the last time they would play as a team from Culbertson High School."
