Bronco teams fight off Wheatland

WAUNETA -- Wheatland was looking to avenge a GPAC championship game loss to Wauneta-Palisade, but fell short Thursday night 47-41.

The Warriors pulled to within four at the end of three quarters, but were outscored by the Broncos 10-8 in the final quarter.

Wauneta-Palisade was led by Joseph Humphrey with 23 points, 16 of those in the second half. Matt and Marc Klima each dropped in 7 points.

Luke Johnson and Mark Johnson each scored 11 points for Wheatland

The 14-4 Broncos, ranked ninth in class D-1 by the Omaha World-Herald, travel to Maywood Friday night and wrap up the regular season next week against Dundy County.

Wheatland, 13-5 and ranked eighth in Class D-1, travels to Lodgepole tonight and finishes the season next week at Lakeside Central.

WAUNETA -- The Broncos jumped out a 27-11 halftime lead and went on to a 54-38 win over Wheatland on Thursday night.

With 7 field goals, Melissa Long led Wauneta-Palisade in scoring with 18. Staci Alberts provided another 11 points.

Wheatland was led by Nikki Sis with 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and 11 from Megan Ross.

Wheatland, 12-7, travels to Lodgepole tonight to finish out the season.

Wauneta-Palisade, 17-2 and ranked fifth in Class D-1 by the World-Herald, hits the road to Maywood for their final game.

CAMBRIDGE -- The Cambridge Trojan girls rolled to a 72-58 win Thursday night over Bertrand.

Staci Moore and Lisa Minnick combined for 45 of Cambridge's points with 23 and 22 points, respectively.

Minnick led at the boards with 9 rebounds and Moore pulled down another 8.

Teammate Ashley Rice chipped in 11 points while Andi Langley finished with 9.

Bertrand's Kinsey DeBoer, Mandy Kuck and Kylee Trautman each scored 12 points.

Cambridge outrebounded Bertrand 45-37.

Cambridge (13-7) finishes the regular season tonight with a game at home against Alma.

CURTIS -- Medicine Valley pulled out a 49-47 win over Eustis-Farnam in front of the home crowd Thursday night.

Tied at the end of three quarters, the Raiders finished with a 13-11 edge in the final quarter to take the win.

Medicine Valley's Taylor Wolfe scored 17 points to lead her team. Lisa Elson added another 13 points.

Lisa Fagot hit 4-of-5 from the charity stripe and finished with a team-high 15 points.

Christina Schroeder closely followed with 14 points and 4 assists. Chelsea Wolfe had 12 points and 7 rebounds.

The Raiders shot 12-of-17 from the free throw line, while the Knights were 9-of-12.

Medicine Valley (13-7) travels to Stapleton tonight while Eustis-Farnam (14-4 and 6-2 in the CPC) goes to Overton.

AXTELL -- The Republican Valley girls basketball team was edged out 48-47 at Axtell Thursday night.

The Mustangs tried to rally with a 13-5 fourth quarter run. Rep Valley trailed at halftime 31-25, but closed the gap with a 12-9 third quarter.

Caitlin Schaffert led the Mustangs with 16 points, 17 rebounds, 2 steals and 6 blocked shots.

Savannah Noyes had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocked shots. Jaime Coolidge added 10 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.

Cayla Skaritka had 5 points, 2 rebounds and 4 assists. Lindsay Esch had 2 points, 4 steals and 2 assists. Lisa Daffer added 1 point and 2 rebounds.

Megan Knoble led Axtell with 16 points. Ashley Bergstrom added 10.

Republican Valley, 12-7, plays at Dundy County Saturday.

The Axtell boys defeated Republican Valley 59-57. No details were available at press time.
