ATWOOD -- Lyle Gene McCain, 68, died Wednesday (Sept. 18, 2002) at his home in Atwood.

He was born March 6, 1934, in Oberlin to Louis H. and Bethel (Maw) McCain. He attended country school at District 10 before graduating from Atwood High School. He later attended McCook Junior College.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1954 and served for more than one year prior to receiving a medical discharge.

On Dec. 28, 1955, he married Martha Belle "Marty" Gandy at Liberty, Miss. The couple resided in Atwood where he worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation for 19 years. He also worked for the Atwood Cheese Plant and on the farms of Deloit Peterson and Bill Lewis.

He was a member of the Atwood Masonic Lodge 164 AF&AM, Eastern Star Radiant Chapter 229, and was a Past Associate Guardian of Bethel No. 64 of Jobs Daughters. He was also a member of the Isis Temple, Scottish Rite and the Consistory, all of Salina.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant daughter, Cynthia.

Survivors include his wife, Martha "Marty" McCain of Atwood; four sons, Lawrence "Bud" and wife, Micki of Ludell, Leslie "Les" and wife, Susan of Atwood, Anthony and wife, Sue of Reedsburg, Wis. and Joseph and wife, Connie of Atwood; three daughters, Martha "Butch" and husband, Brad Bowles of Atwood, Jennifer and husband, Anthony Schmid of Alliance and Anita and husband, James Jankovits of Crawford; one brother, Louis McCain and wife, Shirley of Atwood; one sister, Elinor Norman of Atwood; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be Friday, 2 p.m., at Brantley Funeral Chapel in Atwood with the Rev. James Larson officiating.

Interment will be in the Atwood Fairview Cemetery. Graveside rites will be performed by the Eastern Star Radiant Chapter 229 of Atwood.

Visitation is today until 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until service time.

Memorials may be given in his name to the Eastern Star Radiant Chapter 229 of Atwood.
