Teen pregnancy

Tuesday, May 21, 2002

Dear Editor:

May is National Teen Preganancy Prevention Month.

Family planning, a program of People's Family Health Services, has valuable resources available to parents to enable them to become approachable parents.

How many parents talk to their kids about sex? How many kids talk to their parents about sex? Talking to kids about sex is more than asking, "Do you do it?"

It must be a two-way conversation because if the young people aren't talking, they probalby aren't listening.

Studies indicate that the U.S. has the highest birth rate for teenage girls of all industrialized nations. This is all preventable if we discuss it with our children. Straight talk with teens is important.

Be adept at explaining all the reasons they should abstain from sex.

The clinic at 111 West C in McCook has free resources available to help parents deal with this issue in their children's lives.

Sincerely,

Tina Schult

Clinic Director,

People's Family Health Services
