Opinion

Don't cut ag

Wednesday, April 2, 2003

Dear Editor,

I am a student at McCook Junior High School. I would like to voice my opinion concerning the state budget cuts at our school. I realize as a student that these cuts are a necessity; however, I feel the choice of cuts by the school system is a mistake.

I would like all of you to ask yourselves where do we live and what surrounds us. My answer would be "rural Nebraska and a lot of family farming."

Why, then, do we cut agriculture from our school curriculum? This is definitely a mistake! What we are doing is hindering the future of agriculture in our area.

I live on a farm, participate in FFA, and hoped to pursue a career in agricultural science or an ag-related career. That seems very unlikely now. After this year, the high school resources will be gone. Another reason to leave this area after graduation.

My opinion is the school system is hurting rural Nebraska by not helping the youth of this area -- an agricultural-related area. Heaven forbid if we would cut one of the many sports in our school system.

Thank you for letting me voice my opinion. Dani Pettera,

McCook Junior High School
