HASTINGS -- Shannon Nix of McCook has been named the 2002 National Leader of the Year by Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), the national leadership honor society.

This national award includes a $1,500 scholarship to be applied toward graduate school and a $300 donation to the Hastings College ODK Cirle to promote activities.

"It wasn't just me who won the award," Nix said. "It was the efforts of my amazing circle members and officers. They supported me and worked diligently with me to make it a great year. This award is a product of many people working together." Nix concludes.

She has served as president of the Hastings College ODK Circle.

A student active in all areas of campus life, Nix also was named the college's 2002 Bronco Award winner. The award is the highest, non-academic honor a student can receive at Hastings College.

"Shannon leads by example and does so with a great sense of joy and good humor," Dr. Rich Lloyd, vice president for academic affairs at Hastings College, said in Nix's nomination letter. " Her work on campus has made Hastings College a better campus and community."

The ODK National Leader is selected from among the 13 ODK Province Leaders, who were chosen from among individual circle leaders of the year.

In August, Nix has will start a one-year internship with the National Student Leadership Forum on faith and values in Washington, D.C. She will assist in the planning of student-oriented events that focus on the principles of servant leadership.

Nix, the daughter of Dr. Chris and Karen Nix of McCook, is a 1998 graduate of McCook High School and a 2002 graduate of Hastings College.
