Work session on college name today

Wednesday, October 16, 2002

North Platte -- Mid-Plains Community College governors will grapple with the name controversy at a work session today in North Platte.

The work session, which will include no action on any issues, is set for the First National Bank, 201 N. Dewey in North Platte at 5:30 p.m.

The controversy arose when the Mid-Plains administration unilaterally renamed the area's campuses, offending McCook Community College supporters who saw the McCook facility renamed as the "McCook Campus of the Mid-Plains Community College Area."

The North Platte academic campus was formerly named Mid-Plains Community College.

College board members have received a document from Interim President Carlton R. Williams, laying out arguments applying to the name controversy, concluding that the name "McCook Community College" should not be returned to the McCook campus, suggesting instead that a new name, "Nebraska Plains Community College -- McCook" should be applied here and "Nebraska Plains Community College -- North Platte" applied at the North Platte campuses.
