Operation Hay Lift

Tuesday, January 7, 2003

Ron Wertz of rural Trenton loads bails of alfalfa Monday for Troy Wiese of Benkelman (center), one of 10 Southwest Nebraska cattlemen who received hay in "Operation Hay Lift 2003," coordinated by Mid-Nebraska Community Action. Looking on are truck owner Chris Mote of Trenton (left) and Jason Frederick of Parks (right), of Nebraska Public Radio. MNCA board member Marvin Harms of Culbertson said seven or eight Mennonite farmers from Kalona, Iowa, donated nine truckloads of hay to drought-stricken Nebraska cattlemen. Harms said MNCA and area farmers appreciate the generosity of the Iowa farmers. "These are very good, very fine people," he said. Harms said the farmers not only donated the hay, but money for its transportation and supper for the truck drivers. Craig Schmitz of Trenton, another recipient of 16 bales of the Iowa alfalfa, said, "This is a blessing ... a gift."
