State treasurer to visit McCook on Thursday

State Treasurer Lorelee Byrd will be in McCook Thursday, to honor participants in the "Why I Want to Go to College" essay contest.

The College Savings Plan of Nebraska in conjunction with the Omaha Royals is sponsoring the contest. The Treasurer will be at St. Patrick's Catholic School at 2:30 p.m., to personally honor students that participated in the essay contest.

The College Savings Plan of Nebraska is administered by the State Treasurer's Office. Since the plans inception in 2000, the plan has been nationally recognized as one of the top plans in the country. Lt. Governor Dave Heineman was the treasurer when the plan began and continues to actively promote the plan. He is also the honorary chairman of the contest.

First prize in the essay contest is a $1,000 contribution to a Nebraska College Savings Plan account, second prize is $500 and third place is $250.
