'Water for the West'

Friday, April 18, 2003

Diane Klein of McCook looks at a display of photographic essays depicting the history of Bureau of Reclamation projects west of the 100th Meridian since June 17, 2002, when Pres. Theodore Roosevelt signed the Reclamation Act. Reclamation is the largest wholesale water supplier in the U.S., with operations and facilities in 17 western states. These facilities include 348 reservoirs with the capacity to store 245 million acre-feet of water. Reclamation projects supply one out of five western farmers with irrigation water for approximately 10 million farmland acres. Reclamation projects provide water for industrial and municipal use and for the generation of hydroelectric power. Reclamation facilities also provide flood control, recreation and fish and wildlife benefits. The picture essays are in a van/trailer that has traveled the western United States since the Bureau's 100th anniversary last June. The van was in McCook during the 17th annual Southwest Nebraska Water Conference April 9.
