Thursday, June 5, 2003

Two people were killed Wednesday in traffic accidents in Nebraska, including a Wauneta man killed in a collision with a truck near Hayes Center and another person killed in a fiery accident on Interstate 80.

Wayne Morehead, 47, of Wauneta was killed when the car he was driving collided with a truck driven by Saul Delval of Wauneta on a county road 12 miles west of Hayes Center at about 7:45 a.m. CDT, Hayes County Sheriff Bradley Buescher said.

Morehead was partially ejected from his vehicle and trapped underneath, Buescher said.

Delval received a shoulder injury in the accident.

The interstate accident happened at 2:20 a.m. CDT five miles east of Kearney, the Nebraska State Patrol said.

Part of the highway was shut down for a short time but it took firefighters nearly four hours to control the fire. Cause of the accident was being investigated.

The victim's name was not immediately released.

The deaths brought the number of people killed on Nebraska roads to 114 this year, compared with 137 by June 4, 2002.
