Juniors take on Ogallala

Thursday, July 31, 2003

After sailing through the district tournament, McCook American Legion Juniors coach Jade Muehlenkamp is feeling confident about his team's chances at the state tournament at Seward Friday. McCook will be playing a familiar opponent in Ogallala, a team they've gone 2-1 against this season.

Game time for the opener of the tournament is set for 11 a.m. "We've beat Ogallala 2-out-of-3 times and I see no reason why we shouldn't beat them tomorrow," Muehlenkamp said.

McCook, just 20-20, have transformed into a sharper ball club than they were at the beginning of the season.

Muehlenkamp said that pitching has been the key.

"The turnaround was caused by the pitching," he said. "Early on in the season we had some kids who hadn't pitched a lot. Once the first half of the season was over, they experienced how to get wins at a higher level than before.

"And the offense has been there all year and we've continued to score runs."

McCook has also played against one other team in the tournament. The Juniors defeated Aurora 10-4.

The game will be broadcast on 93.9 The Prairie.
