Area results from 2012 state prep cross-country meet
KEARNEY, Neb. -- Gazette area competitors could not claim any medals at the 2012 Nebraska State High School Cross-Country Championships.
The state meet was held Friday, Oct. 19, at the Kearney Country Club.
Runners in the girls divisions covered a 4,000-meter (2.6-mile) course, while boys division competitors ran 5,000-meters (3.1-miles) course on the hilly Kearney golf course layout.
The top 15 individuals earned medals in each division, and one area runner in the Class D boys division came close to a medal.
Rodger Farr of the Eustis-Farnam/Medicine Valley co-op squad finished 18th with his time of 17 minutes, 56.1 seconds. Farr, a sophomore, finished about 15 seconds out of 15th place.
Southwest senior Adam Eaton ran 27th in the D boys division with his time of 18:06.4, and Quinton Phillips, junior from Maywood, was 45th in 18:21.1.
Cambridge senior Kiel Howell also placed 66th in 18:46.9, and Connor Russell of the E-F/Med Valley co-op team ran 79th in 19:13.9.
THE ONLY SCHOLL to qualify its entire team for state was the Dundy County-Stratton boys in Class D.
The Tigers finished 13th in the final Class D boys team standings with 184 points, finishing ahead of North Platte St. Pat's (205).
Freshman Ty Swenson led the Tigers, as he placed 55th in 18:31.2. Tyler Freeland, a senior, placed 70th in 18:55.8, and senior teammate Jeremy Castillo was close behind in 73rd at 19:03.7.
Senior Dylan Petersen placed 91st for DCS in 19:45.1. Cade Duvel, a junior, ran 95th in 20:09.5, and sophomore Christian Hughes finished 106th in 20:41.9.
Cody Franklin of Bridgeport was individual champion in the Class D boys race with his time of 16 minutes, 33.9 seconds. Nebraska Christian took the next three places to help claim the team title with a lot team score of 46 points. Ainsworth was second in Class D with 71 points, followed by Stanton with 75 points, Crofton with 76 and Yutan with 88.
JUSTINE STONE of Maywood came close to a medal in the girls Class D race. Stone, a junior, finished 22nd with her time of 16 minutes, 30.8 seconds, about 15 seconds out of 15th place.
Southwest senior Cassa McConville finished 26th in the Class D girls race with her time of 16:43.7. DCS freshman Laura Nelms also placed 93rd in 19:03.8.
Marissa Dewispelare of Aquinas Catholic blew away the D girls field, as she won with a time of 15:08.8 -- nearly 40 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
Crofton's girls scored a low team total of 23 points to win the Class D girls division. North Platte St. Pat's was second with 76, followed by Malcolm with 80 and Bertrand/Loomis with 108.
CHASE COUNTY freshman Alyssa Moreno was the lone area competitor in the Class C girls race. Moreno finished 52nd with her time of 17 minutes, 31.0 seconds.
Holdrege standout Gabriella Gracia won the Class C girls gold medal with a time of 14:48.2. Columbus Scotus won the team title, scoring a low total of 43 points. The Cozad girls were runner-up with 56 points followed by the Boone Central/Newman Grove co-op team with 69 points. The Holdrege girls were sixth with 110 points.
There were no area entries in the Class C boys division. Ogallala's James McKeag won the individual title with a time of 16:53.2, nipping Jalen Grant of Valentine by less than two seconds.
Milford won the Class C boys team title with a low score of 50 points. Fort Calhoun was second with 65, with Cozad third at 72 and Ogallala fourth at 74.
In the Class A races, Lincoln East's girls and Fremont's boys won team titles. Jeralyn Poe of Lincoln North Star won the girls race with her time of 14 minutes, 42.6 seconds. Joseph Harter of Millard West claimed the boys individual title in 15.22.9.
The Kearney boys scored 89 points to finish fourth in Class A.
