Clownin' with Maggie Mae

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Maggie Mae Hilliard of Oxford, Wisconsin, RFD TV and the stage at Branson, Missouri, clowns on and off the stage during her first-ever performance in Nebraska, during McCook's annual Heritage Days Celebration Saturday evening. Maggie Mae, her "Heartland Country" band and her husband, Roger (AKA "Mr. Maggie Mae," whom she hugged for good luck before the show), were special guests of Maggie Mae's No. 1 fan, Dale McNutt of McCook. Dale and Maggie Mae met several years ago when Dale ordered her CD's, and then visited with her on the phone when they didn't arrive. Dale has since attended Maggie Mae's concerts and visited her cafe and family farm, and they've become good friends and, Maggie explained from the stage, "just part of the family." Maggie Mae and her band perform old-time western, and lots of '50's and '60's country, "what I grew up listening to with my Dad," Maggie said -- "Crazy Arms," "Someday Soon," "The Auctioneer's Song," "He'll Have to Go," Floyd Cramer's "Last Date." She has learned to yodel, mimicking yodeling legend Janet McBride on McBride's CD "50 years of Yodeling Songs." (McBride has appeared at the annual Burton's Bend Music Fest in Holbrook, Nebraska). One of the newest Maggie Mae fans said, as she left the auditorium, "Oh, I had forgotten how much I loved the old-time, original country music."
