THORNTON, Colorado -- Lloyd Leslie Nokes, 91, died Tuesday (June 28, 2011) at Sunny Acres Villa Care Center in Thornton.

He was born Feb. 16, 1920, in Danbury, Nebraska, the son of the late Leslie Earl and Notie E. (Thomas) Nokes. Lloyd grew up in Danbury and graduated from Danbury High School in 1938. He attended the University of Nebraska through his sophomore year. He began working construction on the dam in Ogallala, Nebraska.

On June 21, 1941, Lloyd married Twila Breach in Oberlin, Kansas. They moved to California, where he was employed by North American Aircraft.

Lloyd entered the U.S. Army Air Corp on Oct. 27, 1942, serving during World War II. Following his honorable discharge on Dec. 10, 1945, the couple moved to Denver, Colorado, where he began working for the Chicago Burlington and Quincey Railroad becoming an engineer. The couple moved to McCook, Nebraska in 1967. He retired in 1984. The couple returned to Denver in 2009.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in McCook, and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Lillian and her husband, Macdonald "Mac" Newberry.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Twila of Denver; two sons, Ronald W. Nokes and wife, Lois of Westminster, Colorado, and Steven Nokes of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; daughter, Diane Messing and husband, David of Kirkland, Washington; two brothers, Melvin Nokes and wife, Nada of McCook and Harold and wife, Ena of Lincoln, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and relatives and friends.

Memorial services are Saturday, 10 a.m., at First Congregational Church in McCook with the Rev. Steve Bales officiating. Inurnment is in Danbury and Marion Cemetery in Danbury.

Memorials may be given in his name and friends may sign his register at Herrmann Funeral Home in McCook during regular business hours.
