WEC offender apprehended

Thursday, September 10, 2009

An offender who attempted to walk away from the Nebraska Department of Corrections Work Ethic Camp in McCook was apprehended within 12 minutes.

Antonio Minor, 19, of Omaha, absconded Thursday at about 1:14 p.m. and was quickly taken into custody by staff and the Nebraska State Patrol.

Minor was sentenced to the Work Ethic Camp on April 20 from Douglas County on a Class II robbery charge. Minor will return to Douglas County where he will appear before a District Court Judge.

  • Good job at apprehending the person! Why or how did he get out?? Does the WEC need better security measures??

  • I don't know, they've always seem to capture the escapees. Then again, maybe if they were smart they would realize they'd be out faster then escaping and getting caught and then sent back to prison with another 10 years.

  • Well they don't catch them all.... the last one that got out before this guy made it all the way to lincoln before the state patrol found him... maybe they need to look at their policies and procedures.

  • I absolutely agree that they need to do SOMETHING about their security measures! I know that the offenders aren't hardened criminals but still they are there for a reason!! I know someone quite closely that works at WEC and is CONSTANTLY complaining about the offenders, the staff, and stupid policies and regulations! If WEC wants to be taken seriously by potential offenders they need to step it up and prove that they are worthy of being dreaded by offenders and not looked upon as a "walk in the park".

  • The description of the average inmate housed at the WEC is innacurrate to say the least. In the state of Nebraska, by the time anyone gets this far in the correctional system, they are already well on thier way to lifetime criminal status. The criminals at WEC are capable of anything that the inmates at Tecumseh are, they just dont have the experience yet. The staff do not stop a majority of the absconders because the facility is not set up for that level of security, and the staff is not trained to use that level of force. OVER PAID! Eddy, do you have any idea what the staff at WEC makes? They make the same as a staff member at any Nebraska correctional facility, next to nothing. Not too many years ago there was a female staff member assaulted at Tecumseh with a mop handle, she spent several days in the hospital with multiple lacerations. On top of that, the inmate that assaulted her had full blown aids, and was also bleeding at the time. This kind of thing happens daily at correctional facilities, and I have seen several of my co-workers at the time that did not live to tell about it. They make about 14 dollars an hour. Why dont you step on the maximum security yard at Tecumseh for that. Why dont you volunteer to be apart of a forced cell move team on an inmate with aids or hepatitus for 14 bucks an hour. These people are way under paid. It is the fault of the state that the security measures in this facility are not adequate, not the staff.
