ELWOOD -- Iris I. Evans, 82, died Sunday (Jan. 18, 2009) at Elwood Care Center.

She was born Nov. 21, 1926, in Gosper County to Oren and Inez (Whisler) McKenzie. She attended rural grade school north of Elwood and graduated from Elwood High School in 1944. After graduation, she taught for one year and then worked as a telephone operator in Lexington until she married in 1949.

On Jan. 16, 1949, she married Bill Evans at the First Christian Church in Elwood. They farmed for many years in the Elwood area. Her husband died Feb. 20, 1999. In 2003, she moved into the Elwood Care Center.

She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Elwood, a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship of Elwood and volunteered for the American Cancer Society for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, Harriet Evans and brothers, Jack and Dale McKenzie.

Survivors include her sons, Dennis and wife, Kay Evans of Elwood, Norman and wife, Cynthia Evans of Elwood, Terry and wife, Marlene Evans of Smithfield and Kelly and wife, Mary Evans of Sublette, Kan.; daughter, Beverly and husband, Mike Dyer of Crawford; sister, Gail Willson of Kearney; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m., at First Christian Church in Elwood with the Rev. Linda Newman officiating. Interment will be in the Elwood Cemetery.

Viewing and visitation will be Thursday from 2 - 8 p.m., at First Christian Church in Elwood with the family present from 5 - 7 p.m. Condolences and personal reflections may be left at www.elwoodfuneralhome.com.
