OBERLIN -- Leslie H. Walters, 89, formerly of Oberlin, died Saturday (Dec. 13, 2008) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

He was born Aug. 7, 1919, in Quanah, Texas to Walter and Lillian (Smith) Cheatham. He grew up in Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II.

He married Vena Walters. They lived in Oberlin and moved to Indianola in January of 2008. He worked as a carpenter.

He was a member of the Methodist Church, Oberlin American Legion and St. Andrew Society of Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bill, Raymond, Judd, Jay, Mabel and Natalie; and nephew, Larry Walters.

Survivors include his wife, Vena of Indianola; step-daughters, Hope Kathka of Indianola, Nancy and husband, John Hoskins of Charlotte, Mich.; sister, Lucille Cheatham of Medford, Okla.; six step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin. Inurnment will be in the Oberlin Cemetery.
