ATWOOD -- Alden Herbert Rogers, 91, died Thursday (Nov. 27, 2008) at his home.

He was born Dec. 3, 1916, to Henry and Elma Oyster Rogers. He attended school in Atwood and graduated from Rawlins County High School in 1936. He lived and worked on the family farm until October of 1940, when he moved to Vernon, Calif., to work.

He married Edith B. Kersenbrock on Nov. 19, 1941, in Las Vegas, Nev. He was drafted into the U. S. Army on May 26, 1945, and served with the 1st Occupation Army in Berlin as an MP until honorably discharged in July 1946. He returned to the farm where he lived and worked the rest of his life.

He drove the school bus for 26 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion and the Masons.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Survivors include his wife, Edith of Atwood; daughters, Dian and husband, John Vap of Atwood, Donna and husband, Bill Roe of Atchison, Kan., Darlene and husband, Lloyd Irwin of Albuquerque, N.M., Joyce and husband, Russ Shreves of Wichita, Kan., and Joann Ludke of Oletha, Kan.; sister, Velora Schmahl of Loveland, Colo., nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and relatives and friends.

Services will be Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at United Methodist Church in Atwood with the Revs. Gary Davison and Paul Irwin officiating. Interment will be in the Atwood Fairview Cemetery with military honors.

Memorials may be given to Atwood 2nd Century Fund, United Methodist Church and Hospice of Northwest Kansas.
