BARTLEY -- Elmo E. Sughroue, 83, died Monday (Oct. 13, 2008) at Community Hospital in McCook.

He was born on a farm southeast of Indianola on June 2, 1925, to Paul and Clara (Pycha) Sughroue. At the age of three, the family moved to a farm southeast of Bartley where he lived for 80 years. He attended district 45 country school and graduated from Bartley High School in 1942. He went to the Grand Island Business College in 1942 and 1943.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army in September 1944 and discharged in July of 1946. He attended field artillery school at Fort Sill, Okla. He served in the Pacific Theatre on the Island of Luzon in the Philippines with the 274th filed artillery Battalion. He was a member of a gun crew and later an artillery mechanic.

He attended the Nebraska State Trade School at Milford from the fall of 1948 through the spring of 1951. He graduated from the machine shop department. He returned to Southwest Nebraska and began farming, venturing out on his own in 1954.

On Nov. 9, 1957, he married Minnie Irene Springer at St. John's Catholic Church in Cambridge.

He was a 4-H leader and a member of the St. John's Catholic Church, Bartley American Legion Post No. 245, Liar's Association, and was a director on the Red Willow Soil and Water Conservation Board and the middle Republican Natural Resource District Board for many years. He wrote a column in the Indianola news starting in August 1996 called "Elmo's Corner."

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Betty ten Bensel.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie Irene of Bartley; two daughters, Debra and husband, Alvaro Hernandez of Mexia, Texas and Rose and husband, Stephen Miller of Kearney; three sons, Paul and wife, Sherry of Dallas, Texas, Marion of Bartley and Wilfred and wife, Sheri of Bartley; one sister, Susanna and husband, Dwight Gallatin of Danbury; brother-in-law, Roy ten Bensel of Cambridge; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Robert Barnhill officiating. Interment will be in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Cambridge.

Rosary will be recited today at 6:30 p.m., at Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge.

Memorials may be left at the mortuary in his name to the St. John's Catholic Church in Cambridge.
