Don Meints

OBERLIN -- Don Meints, 81, died Thursday (April 10, 2008) at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

He was born Nov. 20, 1926, in rural Culbertson to Henry I. and Alice E. (Seed) Meints. He was raised on a farm near Culbertson and attended District 55 school. He graduated from Culbertson High School in 1943.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On June 10, 1947, he married Doris Kleint. She preceded him in death. On July 4, 1985, he married Charlotte (Rowberry) Walinder. He farmed near Culbertson until 1965, and then becane a rural mail carrier. In 1993, he moved to Oberlin after retiring.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 133; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6219 of Culbertson; the Culbertson Fire Department; St. John Lutheran Churches in Culbertson and Oberlin, and the Nebraska Rural Letter Carrier Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Doris; two brothers, Raymond and Vernon; two sister-in-law, Nadine Meints; brother-in-law, Wilbur Kleint; and a grandson, John Meints.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Meints of Oberlin; a son, Stanley Meints of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Donna and husband, Rodney Carlson of Grand Island and Connie and husband, Ted Stuckey of Lincoln; two step-sons, Michael and wife, Glenda Walinder of Lincoln and Mark Walinder and fiancee, Jenna Patterson of Wheatridge, Colo.; a step-daughter, Marcia Stecklein of Topeka, Kan.; his twin sister, Doris and husband, Wilbur Brown of Elm Creek; a brother-in-law, John and wife, Jan Rowberry of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters-in-law, Myra Meints of Lincoln and Lucille Grassmeyer of Lexington; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services were Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oberlin with the Rev. Brad Rick officiating. Interment was in the Culbertson Cemetery.
