RIFLE, Colo. -- Birdee D. Meyers May, 94, died July 23, 2006.

She was born Sept. 2, 1911, in Hendley to Frank L. and Lillie Boop Meyers. She attended school at Hendley and Beaver City.

On April 5, 1931, she married Harold I. May. The marriage ended in divorce.

During World War II, the family moved to Oklahoma and California where she worked in the defense plants as a "Rosie the Riveter." After the war, the family moved to Colorado, residing in Clifton, Rifle and Denver.

In 1972, she earned her AA degree in nursing from Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colo. She worked at Glen Valley Nursing Home in Glenwood Springs, Colo., and at E.D. Moore Nursing Home in Rifle, where she served as director of nursing until retiring.

She was a member of the Christian Church in Rifle and taught an adult Sunday School class.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Donna; a brother, Darrel; a great-grandson, David Lee Perrin; and a son, Denny.

Survivors include two sons, D.D. May and wife Martha, of Fort Worth, Texas, Philip May and wife, Frances of Aurora, Colo.; a daughter, Marilyn Cozza and husband, John of Rifle; a brother, Floyd Meyers of Wichita, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Memorial services will be Tuesday, 2 p.m., at the Hendley Cemetery with the Rev. Phil Olsen officiating.

Wenburg Funeral Home of Beaver City is in charge of local arrangements.
