LINCOLN -- Wilma J. (Kompus) Tongish, 74, of Herndon, died Monday (Aug. 23, 2004) at Bryan LGH Medical Center in Lincoln.

She was born May 18, 1930, to John and Theresa (Toth) Kompus in Herndon. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class.

On Sept. 28, 1948, she married Denis W. Tongish. They built a farming business.

She served as a Eucharistic minister, choir member, lector and decorator for St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was active in many community and civic organizations including the Kansas Farm Bureau, the Pride Committee and the Herndon Library.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include her husband, Denis of Herndon; her children, June Tongish of Salt Lake City, Utah, Dave Tongish of Newton, Kan., Joe Tongish of Topeka, Kan., Jim Tongish of Newton, Kan., Dawn Tongish of Dallas, Texas and Dee Davis of Kansas City, Kan.; sister, Betty Harden of Goodland, Kan.; brother, Emery Kompus of Herndon; and ten grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial is Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church in Herndon with the Rev. Damian Richards officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Herndon.

A parish vigil and Christian Mothers rosary will be said Friday, 7 p.m., at the church.

Visitation is Friday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and after 6 p.m., at the church.

A memorial has been established in her name and be given to the Herndon Public Library or Christian Mothers Altar Society of Herndon.
