NORTON, Kan. -- Darlene Gladys (Boxberger) Veh, 75, died Wednesday (May 26, 2004) at Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kan.

She was born Jan. 7, 1929, to Henry Jr. and Grace Frances (Spena) Boxberger in Wakeeney, Kan. She lived with her family in Wakeeney before moving to Norton in 1941. She attended public schools in Wakeeney and Norton and received her bachelor's of music degree from Bethany College and master's of education degree from Fort Hays State University.

She taught elementary music in St. Francis for two years, one year in Glade, four years in Kensington and two years in Kirwin in elementary and high school band and vocal.

On July 11, 1953, she married William Myron Veh in Norton. The couple made their home in Wakeeney before moving to Logan in 1954. In 1964, they moved to Norton where she taught vocal music in the elementary and junior high schools for 20 years. In 1984, they moved to Oberlin where they operated the Enfield Memorial Chapel until retirement in 1993, at which time they returned to Norton.

She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was one of the church organist and choir directors for many years. She was also the past president of the LWML. she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, MENC, KMEA, KNEA and life member of the NEA. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and has been awarded the Paul Harris medal for her contributions to the Rotary Scholarship Foundation. She served as the music director for Sunflower Girls State for 11 years.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; and one brother-in-law, Roger Wolfe.

Survivors include her husband, Myron of Norton; three children, Arloa Kay and husband, Joe Barnes of Smith Center, Kan., Tona Leigh and husband, Ron Leiker of Andover, Kan., and Darron Douglas and wife, Dawn Veh of Hutchinson, Kan.; one sister, Celia Dee Wolfe of Norton; and seven grandchildren.

Services are Saturday, 11 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Norton. Interment will be in Norton Cemetery.

Friends may call Enfield Funeral Home today until 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Immanuel Lutheran Choir Music Fund or Organ Fund and the Norton Public Library.
