RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- Kjell Axelson, 83, died Feb. 22, 2004, in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

He was born June 21, 1920, to Carl and Amanda (Hermansen) Axelson in Oslo, Norway. The family moved to America in 1925 and made their home in McCook. He graduated from McCook High School in 1938.

In June 1940, he married Arlene Walters in McCook.

He entered the Navy and served during World War II.

For 42 years he was employed as manager in mechanical operations of the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad. He retired in 1981.

In May 2003, he married Marjorie Hunt in Cathedral City, Calif.

He was a member of the McCook Masonic Lodge 135 AF and AM, the BNSF Retirees Group, the USS George Alumni and was active in the Crime Stoppers organization.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene on Dec. 2, 1993; one son, Gary Axelson in 1960; and one brother, Tore.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; one son, Carl Axelson of Naperville, Ill.; one brother, William Axelson and wife, Jean of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Evelyn Tackels and husband, Charles of Sun City, Calif., and Shirley Johnson of McCook; and one sister-in-law, Verda Axelson of Denver.

Services are Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at Herrmann Funeral Chapel in McCook. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.
