Alexander Schaefer

JEROME, Idaho -- Alexander Schaefer, 79, died Monday (Jan. 12, 2004) at Twin Falls Care Center in Idaho.

He was born Dec. 17, 1924, to Conrad and Anna Adolph Schaefer in Shields, N.D. He was raised in Culbertson and graduated in 1943.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps and participated in operations against enemy forces in the Pacific Theater where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

On June 12, 1949, he married Ila Bailey in Imperial. He graduated from Colorado A&M in Fort Collins, Colo., in 1952. In 1953, the couple moved to Jerome where he began working for the State of Idaho Health Department and later for the Division of Environment as an environmental quality specialist, retiring in 1983.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, David Kreitzer, John Kreitzer, Conrad Schafer and Frederick Schaefer.

Survivors include his wife, Ila; three children, Lenora and husband, Carlyle Moeller of Twin Falls, Mike and wife, Ruthann Schaefer of Henderson, Nev., and Annette and husband, Albert Hornbacher of Jerome; one brother, Henry Schaefer of Holdrege; one sister, Esther Carroll of Fort Lupton, Colo.; and four grandchildren.

Services were Jan. 15 in Jerome.
