Nettie J. Davenport

HOLDREGE -- Nettie Jane Davenport, 78, of Holdrege, formerly of Orleans, died Saturday (Sept. 8, 2001) at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.

She was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Furnas County, near Oxford, to George and Maggie (Allen) Payne. She attended rural schools in Furnas and Harlan Counties, and graduated from Stamford High School with the class of 1941. In 1946 she attended the Lincoln School of Commerce.

On Aug. 31, 1952, she married Juddson Davenport of Orleans. In 1967, the family moved to Cambridge where she was employed for more than 15 years by Twin Valley Public Power District. They retired in 1983 and relocated to Orleans. In July of 2000 they moved to Holdrege.

She accepted the Lord as her Savior in September of 1949 She has been an active member of the Evangelical Free Church in Orleans, and was presently a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Stamford. She volunteered at Camp Joy, and was a member of the Orleans Civic Club, Harold Morin Post No. 184 American Legion Auxiliary, and the Birthday Club in Orleans.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lester and Dean Payne; and one son-in-law, Marvin Skrdlant.

Survivors include her husband, Juddson of Holdrege; three daughters, Cynthia Johnson and husband, James of Akeley, Minn., Jane Bolling of Lincoln, and Joy Davenport of Hastings; two sons, John Davenport and wife, Dora of Atwood, Kan., and James Davenport of Hastings; one brother-in-law, Merle Davenport of Orleans; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Kevin Wood officiating. Interment will be at the Orleans Cemetery.

Visitation is today until 9 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home in Orleans.
