Wayne DeForest Upward

ARAPAHOE -- Wayne DeForest Upward, 82, died Wednesday (Sept. 26, 2001) at the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Nursing Center at Arapahoe.

He was born Sept. 27, 1918, at Holyoke, Colo., to William DeForest and Ethel (Davis) Upward. He graduated from Arapahoe High School with the class of 1937.

He served in the Army Air Force from 1941 to 1945, during which he served three years in England where he received the Soldier's Medal for Bravery.

On July 1, 1944, he married Iris Fudge at Leicester, England. They moved to Arapahoe when he was discharged from the military. He owned and operated Upward Service Station until retiring in 1982.

He served on the Arapahoe City Council for 12 years, the Arapahoe Fire Department for more than 40 years, was a Boy Scout Troop Leader and Arapahoe Rotary Club member. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he served as Sunday School teacher, a Bishop's Committee Member and Senior Warden.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lois Hardin; and one brother, Laurel Upward.

Survivors include his wife, Iris Davis Upward; two sons, Robert and wife, Stormie of LaGrand, Ore., and John and wife, Pamela of Fort Worth, Texas; one daughter, Elizabeth and husband, David Hendricks of Arapahoe; one sister, Maureen Newman of Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, 10 a.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Arapahoe with the Revs. Barbara J. Petersen and Lawrence Jaynes officiating. Interment will be at Arapahoe Cemetery in Arapahoe. Military honors will be provided by the Veterans Organization of Arapahoe.

Visitation is today until 8 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., at Williamson-Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe.
