Carl Schafer

CULBERTSON -- Carl Schafer, 88, died Thursday (Dec. 6, 2001) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

He was born Jan. 6, 1913, at Frank, Russia, to Jake and Marie (Ditter) Schafer. Following the death of his father, he and his mother came to the United States in 1923 and settled at Culbertson.

On Dec. 12, 1939, he married Helen Wiederspan at Denver, Colo. They resided in Denver until 1950 when they purchased a farm northwest of Culbertson. They farmed until their retirement in 1972 when they moved into Culbertson. She preceded him in death on Feb. 28, 1982.

On April 28, 1983, he married Helen E. Schafer. they resided in Culbertson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Helen.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Schafer of Denver; one son, Ronald Schafer and wife, Joann of Culbertson; two daughters, Myrna Amen and husband, Kenneth of Norfolk, and Susan Carlson and husband, Delane of Windsor, Colo.; two step-daughters, Barbara Hession of Denver, and Betty Farlow and husband, Ed of Cortez, Colo.; one brother, Solomon Schafer and wife, Caroline of Denver; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday, 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity United Methodist Church at Culbertson with the Rev. Dan Spearow officiating. Interment will be at the Culbertson Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in his name, and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Home of Culbertson.
