James Doran 'Jake' McCoy

ARAPAHOE -- James Doran "Jake" McCoy, 74, died Tuesday (Jan. 22, 2002) at his home in Arapahoe.

He was born Dec. 31, 1927 to Stacy B. and Edith E. (Thomas) McCoy near Holbrook.

He graduated from Arapahoe High School in 1945, and attended the University of Nebraska before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. In 1948, he was discharged from the Navy, reentered the University of Nebraska and later graduated from the Reisch School of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa. He then joined his father in the McCoy Auction and Real Estate firm in Arapahoe.

On Aug. 14, 1950, he married Shirley I. Burton.

He was a member and Past Senior Warden of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Arapahoe, a member and Past Master of Monument Lodge No. 293 A.F. & A.M., Hastings Consistory of the Scottish Rite, Tehama Shrine, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, Rainbow Girls Advisory Board, Nebraska and National Auctioneers Associations, American Legion Post No. 96, Arapahoe Fire Department and Rescue Unit, Arapahoe Municipal Golf Course board of directors and the Arapahoe Chamber of Commerce.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Stacy Leon McCoy.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of Arapahoe; three daughters, Candace and husband, Gary Torrance of Monument, Colo., Michelle and husband, Russel Olsen of Stuart, and Stacia and husband, Ron Thayn of Lincoln; two sisters, Lelia and husband Lester Haussler of Arapahoe, and Lucetta and husband, Donald H. Andrews of Arapahoe; sister-in-law, Frances McCoy of Neligh; and six grandchildren.

Services will be Friday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Arapahoe with the Rev. Barbara J. Petersen officiating. Masonic rites will be given by Arapahoe Monument Lodge No. 293 A.F. & A.M.; and military rites by American Legion Post No. 96 of Arapahoe.

Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today at Williamson-Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in his name to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the municipal golf course, both of Arapahoe.

Williamson-Wenburg Funeral Home of Arapahoe is in charge of arrangements.
