TRENTON -- Leona W. McCarthy, 94, died Sunday (March 3, 2002) at the El Dorado Manor in Trenton.

She was born Feb. 11, 1908 to Fred and Frieda (Andorka) Shaffer in rural Atwood. She graduated from Trenton High School and later attended Kearney State College. She taught school in rural Hitchcock County.

On Sept. 22, 1932, she married William "Bill" McCarthy. They farmed southwest of Trenton. The family later moved to Lawrence and Fort Peck, Mont. before moving to Hastings where she worked at the Hastings Regional Center.

She was a member of Saint James Catholic Church and Altar Society, as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989; her parents; and six brothers.

Survivors include one daughter, Anita and husband, Gene Kotinek of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; two sons, Dr. Howard and wife, Barbara McCarthy of Littleton, Colo., and Dr. James and wife, Carol McCarthy of Big Fork, Mont.; brother, Dick and wife, Hilda Shaffer; four sisters, Louise Youngquist, Verdene Cantrall, and Joan Lampman all of Trenton, and Mary Beth and husband, Curtis Williams of Sun City, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, 9:30 a.m., at Saint James Catholic Church in Trenton with Rev. Patrick Murphy officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. in the Parkview Cemetery at Hastings.

The rosary will be said today, 6:30 p.m., at the Herrmann Chapel in Trenton.
