Robert Duane Maurer

HOLDREGE -- Robert Duane Maurer, 76, died Tuesday (Oct. 8, 2002) at the Bryan LGH-East Hospital in Lincoln.

He was born Jan. 1, 1926, at Genoa to Robert F. and Edith (Stromburg) Maurer. He attended school in Genoa and graduated with the class of 1943.

He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II from September 1943 to April 1946. He received his training in radio operations at Madison, Wis., during his time in the Navy. Following his service he returned to Genoa and began working for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Grand Island, McCook and then in Holdrege in 1950 where he worked until his retirement.

On Sept. 18, 1948, he married Helen Shields at McCook. He was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church, the Holdrege Country Club, the Elks Club, Eagles Club, the American Legion in Holdrege and the Telephone Pioneers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Maurer and Evelyn Shields; and four brothers-in-law, Harold Sohrweid, Harold Shields, Elmer Shields and John Shields.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of Holdrege; one daughter, Barb and husband, Tim Long of Holdrege; one son, Steve Maurer and wife, Gayleen of Atlanta; three brothers, Richard "Dean" Maurer and wife, Mary Jo of St. Edward, Marvin Maurer of Lincoln and Philip Maurer of Lincoln; one sister, Roberta Sohrweid of Denver, Colo.; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, 10:30 a.m., at All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege with the Rev. Steve Cooney officiating. Interment with military honors will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.

The rosary will be Friday, 9:30 a.m., prior to mass at the church.

Visitation is today until 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:30-8 p.m.
