Leslie Walter Horn

Leslie Walter Horn was born April 19, 1918, at the farm in Ansley. He was born to Charles R. Horn and Nell M. (Kellogg) Horn.

Les graduated from high school in Broken Bow and attended college at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. On March 27, 1940, Les married Vera Mae Volzke in Lexington. They lived in the Burr Oak Community and later owned and operated a ranch near Oconto on the South Loup River for 15 years. They moved to McCook in 1957.

Les has been associated with the East and West Sale Barns in McCook for 39 years. Les certainly enjoyed the friendship he developed with the farmers and ranchers. Les loved his family and especially appreciated his grandchildren. The grandchildren liked to go stay with their grandparents in the summer and were really happy when Grandpa Les made popcorn and fudge.

Les was an avid race horse fan. One of his greatest joys was watching his horses run. Some of the organizations that Les belonged to include the Elks Club and was exalted ruler in 1947 and 1948, the Oconto Rural Fire Board, Tuckerville School Board and the Eagles.

Survivors include his wife Vera Mae of Cambridge; two sons, Charles and wife, Patsy, from Oconto and James and wife, Connie of Aurora, Colo.; sister, Doris M. Borland of Falls Church, Va.; three granddaughters, Lori Jorgenson, Lana Meredith, Tiffiany Oreskovich; one grandson, J. Tyrone Horn; ten great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Lane Horn; and brother-in-law, Joe Borland.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Services will be Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, 10 a.m., at Carpenter Breland Chapel with the Rev. Art Phillips officiating. Burial will be at Calloway Cemetery, 3 p.m., with the Rev. Dale Coates officiating.

Visitation will be today until 5 p.m. and Wednesday 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
