Irene Inez Gettman

Irene Inez Gettman, 87, died Saturday (Feb. 22, 2003) at Community Hospital of McCook.

Irene was born July 11, 1915, in the depot at Imperial, to Albert C. and Jennie M. (Marvin) Norman. She spent her life from second grade until death in McCook. She graduated from McCook High School in 1932. She was employed for a time by Chitwood Haddock Grocery Wholesale and then Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.

On Oct. 18, 1936, she married Reuben Gettman at the United Methodist Church in McCook.

She joined the Methodist Church in McCook at age 12. She also belonged to the United Methodist Women, United Transportation Union Auxiliary, Degree of Honor Protective Association, and the American Historical Society of Germans and from Russia. She was a 60-year member of the Easter Lily Lodge. She belonged to the McCook YMCA Water Therapy class for several years and served the United Methodist Women's Society as treasurer and then courtesy chairman for eighteen years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben; father and mother, Albert and Jennie; brothers, Eugene and Acton Norman; and sister Maxine Kelly.

Survivors include three children, Karen Joyce Lieske, McCook, James Alan and wife, Zoe Ann, of Dallas, Texas, and Gera Lynn and husband, Steve Beideck, of Davenport, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday, 11:30 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be today until 8 p.m. Family will be receiving friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Memorial United Methodist Women's Society.
