Richard L. Lewis

CAMBRIDGE -- Richard L. Lewis, 92, died Wednesday (July 16, 2003) at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge.

He was born July 7, 1911, to Guy and Jessie (Story) Lewis in Hendley.

He grew up in the Hendley area and graduated Hendley High School Class of 1927. He attended Kearney State College in Kearney for a year.

On Oct. 3, 1936, he married Mildred Fletcher in Beaver City. The couple farmed north of Hendley until they retired in the late 70s. He also served District 44 in the Nebraska State Legislature for two terms from 1971 through 1979. The couple moved to Beaver City after retirement and lived there until moving to Cambridge in 2002.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Beaver City and was active with the Nebraska Wheat Growers Association from 1956 to 1962.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Bob, Carl, Don and Lowell; and three sisters, Greta, Eleanor and one in infancy.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred of Cambridge; two sons, Charles Lewis of Wailua, Hawaii and Richard "Dick" Lewis of Nebraska City; one brother, John Lewis of West Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Margaret Welsch of Northglenn, Colo., five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were today, 2:30 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Beaver City with Rev. Darin Bentzinger officiating. Burial was in Hendley Cemetery in Hendley.

Wenburg Funeral Home of Beaver City was in charge of the arrangements.
