McCOOK, Nebraska -- McCook Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors chose Walmart at their honor business for the first quarter of 2013. According to Chamber Director Tacie Fawver, "Walmart provides a lot for the community. They support many different groups through donations, in addition to employing a lot of people in McCook and the area." An award presentation will be scheduled for early next month.

Nominations for awards to be presented at the annual Chamber Banquet on January 19 are currently being accepted. The banquet, which will include a comedian to entertain the audience, will be held at the City Auditorium. Cost for the event, themed "That's Entertainment", is $35 per person.

Awards to be presented include:

Community Service Award: an organization contributing significantly over the past few years to the improvement of McCook.

Community Builder Award: an individual with a history of service to McCook and the surrounding area, most notably in his or her work for non-profit organizations.

Chamber Volunteer of the Year Award: a member who has displayed an above-average level of participation in Chamber and other activities in the community.

Nominations are being accepted until January 1. Nominators are asked to email, fax, or mail their nominations, which should include a brief history in support of your nomination, to the chamber office or on their web site, www.aboutmccoook.com.

The chamber is also preparing for their "Let It Snow" promotion drawing, which will award 2 lucky winners $5,000 in chamber bucks if it snows six inches or more on Dec. 31, 2012. The drawing will take place Thursday, Dec. 20 at 4 p.m. at the Keystone Business Center, at which time the Festival of Trees auction will also take place.

Nine trees located at the Keystone have been decorated by area businesses and organizations, and the proceeds from the auction of the ornaments will go to the decorators' chosen charity. Refreshments will also be available.

Saturday is the last day to make qualified purchases from merchants participating in the "Let It Snow" campaign. If it snows six inches or more on Dec. 31, shoppers will receive a refund of those qualified purchases.

Also on Saturday is the Schmick's Market Wine Tasting/Chamber mixer.

The Chamber Board is also encouraging everyone to mark their calendars for Feb. 1 to 3, the dates for the 2013 Home and Leisure Show. The show will take place at the new McCook Community College Events Center, which will provide ample space for all booths to be in one area, according to Fawver.
