No major bridge problems in county

Tuesday, December 11, 2012

McCOOK, Nebraska -- The half of Red Willow County, Nebraska's bridges inspected in 2012 have no major structural concerns, the county's surveyor told county commissioners Monday morning.

The county has about 44 bridges, half of which are inspected on a yearly rotating cycle. Many of those inspected this year are of concrete construction or are box culverts.

Surveyor Gary Dicenta said that two first-priority bridges are in far southeast Red Willow County -- one on the Beaver Creek west of Lebanon needs a broken stringer replaced, another on the Beaver east of Lebanon should be posted with a five-ton limit rather than a six-ton limit.

Other concerns are regular maintenance -- erosion control or tree removal. Several signs are damaged and need to be replaced. Commissioner Vesta Dack said it appears from Dicenta's notes that people have been dumping trash in road ditches near bridges, also.
